Foundation Options - Concrete Slab New
A traditional and cost effective foundation is a concrete slab, often referred to as "slab on grade". This type of foundation is for heavy use areas and formal designs. The concrete slab requires minimal excavation to prepare the ground and the slab is typically 4" thick or greater. Wooden forms are used to define the slabs shape and then removed once the concrete sets.
Depending on your climate and property grade, a conventional framed foundation may be necessary. This foundation consists of concrete footings that must be deeper than the frost line,(usually 36" to 48" below the grade) which will prevent the foundation from moving when the soil expands and contracts with the temperature. The exterior foundation walls are typically concrete, cement block or wood. The framing system consists of additional materials such as girders, joists, wire mesh or specialized materials.
Wood Deck
A wood deck foundation for your project is another alternative choice. This foundation is built primarily with high grade lumber, which should be resistant to moisture and insects. Pressure treated lumber is the most economical and efficient. The main components of a wooden deck foundation include footer posts, beams, (to form the base) and decking material. The deck material can be deck boards (similar to 2 x 4's) or exterior grade plywood, depending on your final flooring choice for the room.
Additional Foundation Information
Make sure that your design plans for the foundation you choose comply with all of the local building codes, including setbacks, height restrictions, etc.
If your dwelling has a termite bond, make sure the ground that is excavated is treated before the foundation is started.
Colored aggregates or stamped patterns can customize and soften the concrete's appearance.
Plan for heating, air conditioning, plumbing and electrical wiring before starting the foundation.
